Description
An ornate ruby and diamond two row plaque ring from the late Victorian period (c.1880s). Five rich red mixed cut rubies have been set amongst five sparkling old and Swiss cut diamonds. Forming an eye-catching checkerboard arrangement this design combines the birthstones for the months of April and July. Elaborate part pierced scroll work patterns adorn both sides of the gallery and top sections of each shoulder. Rings gained popularity during the Victorian period when it became fashionable to wear multiple examples on each hand. This was influenced by Queen Victoria and her royal relatives, who dictated styles and tastes to the Empire at large. With rubies traditionally representing passion and devotion, and diamonds love and prosperity this bangle can be related to the 'Romantic' period of the era. This represented a time of marital bliss for Queen Victoria and resulted in some beautiful jewellery designs.
