The Kimberley Yellow Diamond

An incredible tale of provenance, the journey of the Kimberley fancy yellow diamond is one of rarity and relationships spanning two continents.

Sourced from the Sunshine

The name Kimberley is synonymous with the finest yellow diamonds. Located in South Africa’s Northern Cape, diamonds were first discovered here in 1886 and are still mined to this day by a select few.

The Du Toitspan mine, which sits to the East of Kimberley, is renowned for producing larger yellow diamonds of exceptional quality. A recent visit by members of the Pragnell family underscores our longstanding partnership with the mines in this region, which affords us unparalleled access to some of the finest rough in South Africa.

The Story of the Stone

This unique gem was handpicked while still in its rough state. Weighing an impressive 38.19ct, the rough displayed the rich golden colour for which the region is renowned; however, transforming this potential into a high-quality polished gem takes decades of expense, skill, and a steady hand!

The first stage is to plan the polished diamond, through a combination of technology and the human eye, to yield the largest, brightest and richly coloured polished diamond. A gem of this size will be shown to several highly experienced planners to ensure the rough diamond’s potential is maximised. The diamond then goes through several cutting and polishing stages, taking over three months to complete. This transition ensured it reached its peak potential. The rough final revealed a magnificent 20.23ct Fancy Yellow square cushion cut diamond.

Designed to be worn

Each Pragnell Masterpiece carries the number 56 inscribed inside the band to reflect that all of our Masterpieces are designed in numbers 5 and 6 Wood Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, the home of Pragnell. Our designs are a unique collaboration between the Pragnell family and our Pragnell workshops.

At Pragnell, we put the stone first. We craft the mount to amplify the beauty and brilliance of the stone. For instance, this ring's 18ct yellow gold mount has been specifically chosen to amplify the beauty of the fancy yellow diamond. The wide 18ct yellow band with flush set half-moon-shaped diamonds balances beautifully with the central diamond and enhances this gem's wearability.
