Victorian Natural Pearl and Ruby Pin 0.25ct in 18ct Yellow Gold
Old Cut Ruby and Pearl
Description
An 18ct yellow gold, natural baroque pearl and ruby (0.25ct) pearl merchant stick pin from the Victorian period. A characterful bearded head keeps watch, whilst wearing an elaborate baroque pearl turban that is set by a glowing round cut rich red ruby. Looking at this beautiful figure, we are reminded of the romantic watercolours of the Italian artist, Giulio Rosati (1858-1917), whilst evoking the mystery and allure of the Persian Gulf, which was traditionally the centre of the natural pearl trade. Natural pearls were incredibly sought after during this period, as they were plucked from the depths by only the bravest of divers. The largest and most lustrous examples of natural pearls were worth far more than diamonds, and were worn with pride by royalty and the aristocracy. Often presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were often sentimental and highly treasured.
The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album.
