Victorian Diamond Salamander Brooch in 14ct Yellow Gold and Silver
Old Cut, Claw Set
Description
An expertly modelled 14ct yellow gold and silver salamander brooch from the Victorian period. This characterful piece showcases the Victorian obsession with the natural world. Life like models of animals were produced in both jewellery and decorative silverware. Old cut diamonds have been intricately set defining the shape of the salamander with small rubies used to portray the watchful eyes. The salamander has featured in myth and legend since ancient times with this shy amphibian being regarded as a poisonous fire quenching beast. Bejewelled salamanders were worn to symbolise balance, immortality and passion. A beautiful emerald set salamander brooch was part of the 17th-century hoard of jewellery found in Cheapside in 1912.
