Old Cut, Grain Set
Description
A novel 18ct yellow gold and old cut diamond set stick pin, in the form of a penny-farthing bicycle from the late Victorian period. Intricately detailed, both wheel rims have been set with sparkling old cut diamonds. Spinning effortlessly when touched, these will dazzle when worn on the lapel of a jacket or coat. Small diamonds have also been set into the end sections of the handlebars. The penny-farthing was an early type of bike that was incredibly popular during the 1870s-1880s. It is remembered today as a symbol of the Victorian period, often being used to instantly convey an essence of the era. Presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were sentimental and highly treasured. The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album. This example features the French eagle mark for gold.
