The House of Verdura has a rich history having been founded by the Sicilian Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura in 1939. Verdura’s acute awareness of history and a visceral connection to colour and quality ensured some of the most iconic creations of the 20th-century. Working for Coco Chanel in the late 1920s, a European tour introduced Verdura to the wonders of Byzantine Ravenna. The vibrant 6th-century mosaics in the Basilica of San Vitale captivate with bold colours and glimmering gold. Captivated by the jewelled figure of the Byzantine Empress Theodora, Verdura was inspired to produce a range of jewels. As the 20th-century progressed Verdura gained huge popularity amongst the most famous names in the world creating unique pieces that are sought after and collected today. Verdura’s unique style was adored by The Duchess of Windsor who is regarded today as one of the most famous jewellery collectors of the 20th-century. Verdura died in the late 1970s, but the House that carries his name is still producing jewellery today. Pieces inspired by the wonders of Byzantine mosaics are still feature in their collection with these stunning earrings dating from the early 2000s.
