Retro Boivin Bombé Ring 1.32ct in 18ct Rose Gold and Platinum

A retro 18ct rose gold, platinum, sapphire and diamond bombe cocktail ring by Rene Boivin from the 1940s. Adored for bold designs jewellery from the retro period captivated in warm rose and yellow gold, as platinum had been reserved for wartime use. Five sparkling brilliant cut diamonds take centre stage as they spread elegantly across the finger. Securely rub over set in gleaming platinum the fire from these diamonds contrasts superbly against the warm polished rose gold bombe surround. Two parallel rows of four rich ocean blue cabochon sapphires perfectly complete the design, and highlight this ring as an example of iconic retro design. Hugely popular during the earlier Victorian period five-stone rings were known to represent the five qualities of a good relationship: love, commitment, trust, communication and empathy. The Bombé or “bomb shaped” design originated in France during the 1920s, with Rene Boivin producing some of the first examples. The engraver and designer Rene Boivin founded the firm bearing his name in Paris during the 1890s. This period was hugely important for jewellery design, and the Boivin name quickly gained a reputation for high quality unconventional pieces that showcased sculptural naturalism. On Boivin’s death in 1917 Madame Rene Boivin took control of the firm, which continued in family ownership until 1991.
