The Valley of Gems

Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) in Southeast Asia, is known historically for its exceptional quality gemstones, including sapphires, rubies, jadeite and spinel. The majority of stones mined in Burma are rubies, with fewer than 10% of the gemstones being sapphires, making them extremely rare and among the most coveted sapphires in the world.

Several mines in Mogok have been producing sapphires for thousands of years. This area, known as ‘Valley of the Gems’ is a location for an abundance of exceptional gemstones. The Mogok Valley itself is some 4,000km above sea level, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and with little or no road access, meaning the remote location and inhospitable terrain is another factor in the rarity of these incredible sapphires.

Some of the finest Burma Sapphires exhibit a rare phenomenon that give them a velvety appearance, this is caused by 'silk' found within the stone, dispersing light as it enters. This phenomenon combined with an intensely saturated blue hue result in some of the most sought after Sapphires in the world, and give this jewel its particularly fitting name ‘The Burma Blue Velvet’.
