Circa 1970's. “The thing women want most today is a smashing piece of jewellery they can wear in the daytime & on into the evening”. David Webb (1925-1975) was a renowned and celebrated American jeweller who shot to fame after his creative, bold, colourful and bright jewellery appeared on the cover of Vogue in 1950. Each piece was modern, exquisitely handmade and of extraordinary quality. He often used yellow gold to off-set bright enamels & coloured gems with diamonds. By 1955 he had opened his own shop and by 1957 he had launched his Collection of animal jewellery which would eventually include enamel & gem-set carved bracelets of frogs, snakes, elephants, horses and the famous zebra - his logo- as well as dramatic & colourful long sautoirs, rings, bracelets & necklaces of turquoise, coral amethyst mixed with enamels. His clients included Elizabeth Taylor, Barbra Streisand, The Duke of Windsor and Diana Vreeland- the Editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar & Vogue-. A commission by Jacqueline Kennedy soon followed in 1962 for all The White House official gifts often using American mined gems. Frequently visiting museums, he took inspiration from studying many different ancient and antique jewels, boldly re-creating them with his modern twist.
