Antique Edwardian Saltwater Pearl Necklet in Platinum
Graduated Pearl Necklet, with Diamond Clasp
Description
A fine and delicate, platinum and diamond graduated, single strand, natural pearl necklace from the Edwardian period. A row of graduated certified lustrous natural pearls have been securely knotted and feature an eye-catching clasp that has been set with a floral cluster of nine old cut diamonds. These beautiful pearls graduate in size from 3.1-6.2mm, with the largest examples forming a stunning focal point, as they catch the eye sitting at the centre of the neck. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces, showcasing the very best diamonds and gemstones, were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses. Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time. Pearls were much favoured by both the Victorians and Edwardians, who viewed this gemstone from the sea as a sign of purity, and started the tradition of brides wearing pearls on their wedding day. Natural pearls were incredibly sought after during this period, as they were plucked from the depths by only the bravest of divers. The largest and most lustrous examples of natural pearls were worth far more than diamonds, and were worn with pride by royalty and the aristocracy. Pearl strands have been regularly worn by female members of the royal family since Victorian times. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has an extensive collection, which are regularly worn during daytime official engagements.
Sought after and collected today, this natural pearl strand will make a fantastic addition to a jewellery collection. Worn singly, or layered with other necklaces or pendants, it is a hugely versatile piece.
