Edwardian ruby, sapphire & diamond hinged trefoil clover bangle in 14ct Yellow Gold
Cushion Antique Cut, Rubover Set
Description
A statement yellow gold, ruby, sapphire & diamond hinged trefoil clover bangle from the Edwardian period. Sentimental bangles and bracelets were hugely popular at the beginning of the 20th-century with Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) wearing multiple examples on each wrist. Showcasing the influence of Art Nouveau the clover head has been rub over set with a superb trio of gemstones that resonate with patriotism, and can be worn and enjoyed from day to night. Perfectly complementing each other a vibrant red cabochon cut ruby, sea blue sapphire, and old cut diamond take centre stage. The three leaves of the clover or shamrock were often depicted in jewellery as they were known to represent faith, hope and love. Naturalistically positioned the top section of the bangle is completed by a coiled tendril motif. A practical hinge ensures this bangle is effortless to take on and off the wrist with a safety chain ensuring it can be worn with confidence. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces, showcasing the very best diamonds and gemstones, were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses. Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion-conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time.
