Edwardian Peridot and Diamond Brooch in 18ct Yellow Gold
Octagon Cut, Claw Set
Description
An 18ct yellow gold peridot and diamond drop ‘negligée’ style pendant/brooch from the Edwardian era. Fashionable during the period, this type of pendant/brooch was created in many different versions, with the eye-catching asymmetrical drop elements working well with the corseted fashions of the day. Showcasing the lively lime-green tones of peridot (octagonal and kite cut), which was widely used to great effect in many different types of jewellery. Found in a number of locations across the globe (including Myanmar, Norway and Australia) the colour of peridot perfectly suited the dramatic, bold and saturated colours that dominated the elegant fashions of the day. Composed of scrollwork motives the octagonal peridot takes centre stage, and is perfectly complemented by delicate old cut diamonds. Two Kite shaped peridot gemstones form the eye-catching ‘negligée’ knife edge drop sections that delicately move with the wearer. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces showcasing the very best diamonds and coloured gemstones were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses. Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time. A supremely elegant creation this piece is accompanied by its original removeable brooch fitting.
