Description
An 18ct yellow gold, and spring green old cut demantoid garnet five stone ring from the Victorian period. Five verdant green old cut demantoid garnets have been securely claw set and spread elegantly across the finger. One of the most sought after and valuable members of the garnet family, demantoid examples were used to enhance the popular flora and fauna jewels of the period. Five stone rings are said to represent the five qualities of a good relationship: love, commitment, trust, communication and empathy. They became increasingly popular in the Victorian period when it became fashionable to wear multiple rings on each hand. This was influenced by Queen Victoria and her royal relatives, who dictated styles and tastes to the Empire at large. The richly polished openwork yellow gold mount displays rich scrollwork patterns, which enable the maximum of light to enter and exit the stones. The Victorians loved anything bestowed with meaning, and this was particularly true for jewellery. The 'Romantic' period of this era represented a time of marital bliss for Queen Victoria.
