Design & Inspiration
To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III, Pragnell has developed a new style of setting inspired by the flared cross motifs on the St Edward’s Crown, the official coronation crown, that will be lowered onto His Majesty’s head on the day of his Coronation - May 6th 2023. Like the crosses on the St Edward’s Crown, the Pragnell Coronation setting starts with a central rare gemstone to unite the cross. The first three rings to be designed with this setting feature pink, greenish-blue and colourless diamond centre stones carefully framed by a masterfully crafted display of diamonds. Four custom-cut trapeze diamonds recreate the flared arms of the cross and to build a sense of depth, small micro-set pavé diamonds have been delicately set between.
Craftsmanship
This unique setting is not just a homage to the St Edward’s Crown, but also to the passions of our new King. The exacting skills required to cut and set the gemstones in this new way are precious and in short supply. By supporting such artisans within our workshops, we are playing our part in championing traditional craftsmanship within the United Kingdom. King Charles III is a famous champion of craft. Within The Prince’s Foundation, a charity His Majesty set up in 1986, is the School of Traditional Arts, dedicated to ensuring the survival of heritage arts and skills. The Prince’s Trust, of which Pragnell is a patron, has helped many artisans and jewellers when setting out on their careers.
Royal Jewels
The pinnacle of the Crown Jewels was made in 1661 and is the most sacred of all the crowns as it is only ever used at the moment of coronation. Sitting atop the royal crown is a flared cross. This style of cross emerged in the Medieval era as a symbol of Christianity and was often related to the valour of the Knights Templar. It also denotes the sanctity of these royal symbols and can be found throughout the British Crown Jewels including the Sovereign’s Orb and Sceptre.
