Carlo & Arthur Giuliano Emerald and Diamond Enamel Pendant in 18ct Yellow Gold
Square, Oval & Brilliant Cut, Claw Set
Description
A delicate yellow gold, emerald, diamond and enamel Renaissance revival pendant by the legendary Carlo & Arthur Giuliano, from the late Victorian period. Showcasing a central, vibrant, rich green square cut emerald that has been surrounded by an elaborately pierced Renaissance style rosette shape, which dazzles the eye with black and white enamelled scrollwork. Small old cut diamonds have been expertly used to define the four compass points surrounding the central stone and rosette shape. An oval emerald and diamond drop will sparkle and flash with the movements of the wearer, and a large oval black and white enamelled bail means that this pendant can be fitted to a wide range of chain styles. Carlo Giuliano (1831-1895) was an Italian jeweller who settled in London in 1860. The Victorians were fascinated by the past and the fashionable Giuliano focused on both ancient and Renaissance styles. After Giuliano’s death in 1895, the firm continued under his sons Carlo and Arthur, until it eventually closed in 1914. These rich and evocative jewels often featured in the majestic portraits painted by the 16th century Tudor court painter, Hans Holbein, and were greatly admired in Germany and Britain during the 1800s. The resulting Renaissance revival or "Holbeinesque" jewels are admired and sought after by collectors today. The superb quality of examples bearing the signature of Carlo & Arthur Giuliano are also hugely sought after, predominately due to the relatively short period that the firm was an existence.
