Belle Epoque Amethyst Greyhound Head Stick Pin in 18ct Yellow Gold
Description
A beautifully carved amethyst stick pin in the form of a greyhound’s head from the Belle Epoque period. Portrayed in an alert and forward-focused position the natural colour banding in the amethyst has been expertly exploited showcasing the deep purple head and lighter white snout. Secured by a polished yellow gold collar this is a superb example of Edwardian craftsmanship. The greyhound was a popular animal during the period in both France and England being used to symbolise hunting. A loyal pet greyhounds were adored by royalty with both Prince Albert and Queen Alexandra owning these dogs. Often presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were often sentimental and highly treasured. The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album. This example features the French eagle mark for gold.
