Description
A striking 2.40ct old European cut diamond has been securely claw set as the centrepiece of this intricate ring from the Belle Epoque period. A geometric octagonal surround contrasts superbly against the curved lines of the central diamond. This is further showcased by an inner section filled with calibre cut rich red rubies, and defined by an outer frame of old cut diamonds. The design is completed by further smaller old cut diamonds that have been set into the top sections of each shoulder. Traditionally worn together rubies and diamonds have a rich history in jewellery with diamonds symbolising love and prosperity, and rubies passion and devotion. Centred in Paris the Belle Epoque era (1871-1914) was a brief, but important period for jewellery design. Inspired by orchids, feathers and the wonders of haute couture jewellery was worn to excess. Showpiece rings were worn with chokers, sautoirs, bracelets, and head ornaments contributing to a marvellous spectacle. This beautiful example features interesting mascaron and owl head hallmarks indicating that this is a platinum jewel that was originally imported into France for sale.
