Belle Epoque 2.00ct Charles Fontana & Cie Diamond Star Brooch in Silver and 18ct Rose Gold
Old European Cut, Claw Set
Description
A striking diamond star brooch in silver and gold with detachable Hair Ornament ‘en Tremblant’ by Charles Fontana & Cie from the Belle Epoque period. This dazzling jewel is a particularly fine example of a five-ray star brooch centred with an old European cut diamond (2.00ct). The tapering rays showcase further old cut diamonds that would have dazzled in softer evening candlelight. The Parisian House of Fontana was founded in 1840, becoming Charles Fontana & Cie in 1871. Pieces bearing the Fontana signature are known for their expert design and fine craftsmanship. Diamond encrusted Star brooches, crescents & feathers were often attached as fastenings for lace & velvet or adorned elaborate hair styles fixed with ‘en Tremblant’ attachments for the evening & were highly fashionable in the 1890’s. Princess Alexandra was given a ‘parure’ of Diamond star brooches by the Prince of Wales in 1863 as can be seen in a photograph by Alexander Bassano 1881 which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. This collectible jewel is presented in its original burgundy velvet presentation case.
