Description
A delicate cameo ring from the Georgian period. The central cameo features two Roman style figures, and has been expertly carved out of an oval of two colour agate. Secured in a rub over setting and surrounded by a halo of old cut diamonds that have been set into silver. Jewellery from the Georgian era (1714-c. 1837) has rarely survived into current times, with the finest examples being highly coveted by collectors worldwide. For the nobility and wealthy élite, evening social occasions became increasingly popular, which were made all the more enjoyable through the introduction of brighter burning candles. The result was a truly fascinating period for jewellery design, with yellow gold, silver, diamonds and enamel work all combining to produce some truly exceptional pieces. The classical world was a huge source of inspiration for the period, with society leaders such as the Duke of Marlborough amassing a large collection of cameo and intaglio pieces from antiquity.
Antique cameos in good condition are rare and highly collectable. This fine example embodies the eclectic style of the times, whilst remaining a wearable and enchanting treasure.
The development of silver-topped gold by innovative English jeweller, James Cox, in 1767 allowed gems and diamonds to be set in white metal and was highly desirable. The gold backing eliminated the risk of oxidisation marks and constant cleaning that came with using silver alone. Today, the mix of metals is a desirable design choice.
