Belle Epoque Alternating Opal and Diamond Necklace in 18ct Rose Gold
Cabochon Cut, Rubover Set
Description
An 18ct rose gold choker style necklace featuring cabochon opals and old cut diamonds from the Belle Époque period. Opals became increasing popular during the latter half of the 19th-century after extensive deposits of superb examples were discovered in Australia. The rainbow flashes from the seventeen cabochon examples that have been securely rubover set into this necklace are perfectly complimented by the delicate sparkle of old cut diamond set elements that have been showcased between each stone. These elements are composed of scrollwork “C” shaped motifs with a central lozenge. The Belle Époque or Beautiful Era (1871-1914) produced some incredibly interesting pieces, as it encompassed the Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Edwardian periods. The scrolling “C” shaped motifs remind us of elaborate strapwork decoration that originated in the 15th century. A modern removable chain extension has been added to this piece to ensure that it can be worn either in its original choker form or to a slightly longer length.
