Namibian Lagoon Tourmaline Source & Origin

Understanding the unique origin of nature’s rare jewels is of paramount importance as we seek to ensure that the choices we make create a positive impact on people and the planet. This is why we have invested in building partnerships directly with miners across the globe, including Namibia, where we have found shining examples of how gemstone mining can do good.

Namibia is home to a varied countryside that covers mountainous regions, deserts, coastal dunes, and beaches, providing a mineral-rich environment that contributes to the unique and vivid colour of the tourmalines.

Namibian tourmalines, which vary in hue from blue to green, have been highly sought-after since their discovery a century ago. These rare gems are prized for an unrivalled vibrance, caused by a gemmological quirk that allows light to flow through the stones as if like water, making them appear brighter. Tourmalines have become the signature stone of the region, internationally renowned for their unique qualities and colour.

In the Erongo region of Namibia, we have been working with small-scale artisan miners to responsibly source exceptional untreated lagoon tourmalines. Working directly with the source provides traceability and allow us to narrate the story of the gem’s journey from the ground to the finished piece of jewellery, while ensuring that local communities benefit from their sale.

The Namibian artisanal mine is owned and run by the local community and will become the principal source for Pragnell lagoon tourmalines. We are working closely with these artisanal suppliers to find sources of gems that give our clients a clear provenance while also supporting mining communities. Working in the Erongo region on this small scale, we can contribute towards employment, support the welfare of the miners, and provide a source of income for the local community.
